On April 6, 1968 the Tower of the Americas opened in San Antonio for the Hemisfair World’s Fair to celebrate San Antonio’s 250th anniversary. From this tower you can gain a breathtaking view of San Antonio’s downtown and distant landscape. That elevated perspective enables someone to appreciate how familiar locations relate to other places.
Paul’s letter to the Ephesians is somewhat like The Tower of the Americas. It provides an overview of spiritual terrain: God, God’s plan, Christ and his roles, salvation, the church, Christian behavior and spiritual warfare. Within its opening chapters we discover that God’s plan involves exercising a power to transform human lives.
God was and is at work through Jesus. Jesus’ story has ushered in a new era containing a message for everyone!
Ephesians captures something of this universality. For example, although addressed to holy and faithful ones in Christ Jesus, its message describes the power God can exercise within those engulfed in spiritual death and the world’s sinful ways.
Thus Ephesians can remind some of us of what God has achieved in our lives, thereby inspiring gratitude. Or it can reveal some of us about the transforming power God desires to unleash in our lives. Either way, whether sinner or saint, Ephesians is for all of us. Next week we’ll dive in.
