What happens from the beginning to the end of God’s word

“Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified” John 7:38-39.

I was young when the movie, “A River Runs Through It,” came out, so I can’t speak to the plot, but the title could certainly describe what happens from the beginning to end of God’s Word.

Genesis describes a river that flows from Eden, and centuries later Ezekiel has a vision of a trickle flowing from below the temple, where God’s presence resided with men, that became a river so mighty that no one could cross.

After inviting anyone who thirsts to come to Him and drink, the rivers of living water that would flow from Jesus’ heart in this passage had a physical fulfillment in John 19 when His heart was pierced on the cross and atoning blood and water flowed from Him … and a spiritual fulfillment in the last chapter of the Bible as “the river of the water of life” flowed “from the throne of God and of the Lamb” who was slain to purchase men for God by His blood (5:6-10).

So we loudly sing, “Flow, River, Flow”!
