âWhoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, âOut of his heart will flow rivers of living water.â Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorifiedâ John 7:38-39.
I was young when the movie, âA River Runs Through It,â came out, so I canât speak to the plot, but the title could certainly describe what happens from the beginning to end of Godâs Word.
Genesis describes a river that flows from Eden, and centuries later Ezekiel has a vision of a trickle flowing from below the temple, where Godâs presence resided with men, that became a river so mighty that no one could cross.
After inviting anyone who thirsts to come to Him and drink, the rivers of living water that would flow from Jesusâ heart in this passage had a physical fulfillment in John 19 when His heart was pierced on the cross and atoning blood and water flowed from Him ⌠and a spiritual fulfillment in the last chapter of the Bible as âthe river of the water of lifeâ flowed âfrom the throne of God and of the Lambâ who was slain to purchase men for God by His blood (5:6-10).
So we loudly sing, âFlow, River, Flowâ!
