“This is your lot, the portion I have measured out to you, declares the LORD, because you have forgotten me and trusted in lies” Jeremiah 13:25.
Laban was not the best of fathers or fathers-in-law. When Jacob came to his wives to tell them that they were going to move far away from their dad, they said,
“Is there any portion or inheritance left to us in our father’s house? Are we not regarded as foreigners? For he has sold us, and he has indeed devoured our money” (Genesis 31:14-15).
Offspring just assume that they will inherit a portion of their parents’ assets no matter how they have acted—which has led to surprises when they leave all that they own to others who have been more like children to them rather to their biological kids.
Describing the disobedience of His people through a ruined loin cloth hidden in a cleft of a rock and their insistence that He keep their jars filled with wine, God “will fill with drunkenness all the inhabitants of this land” and destroy them. This is their portion, God tells them, their wages earned (Romans 6:23).
Too late they learned, after they reaped what they had sown, that the LORD must be the portion for their souls (Lamentations 3:24). For us too?
