Sometimes, teacher. Always, student (an anecdote).

I’ve tried for almost 25 years now to teach The Way, James’ warning notwithstanding (James 3:1). Probably somewhere along the line, someone learned something useful. I hope so. God specializes in making something out of nothing (present company included, and foremost).

But last week, those I attempt to teach gave me a Master Class in being like Jesus. I called a special meeting on rather short notice to help launch a congregational program. The date and time were set (45 minutes prior to a Sunday evening service), and did they ever show up. The meeting room was filled to the brim with standing-room only!

But, I didn’t show up on time…

…because I forgot about it.

When I finally arrived, what did I find? Smiling faces. Laughter. My phone had been lit up with confusion, concern that something had happened, and even silly selfies from the whole room of people waiting for me to arrive.

I was so embarrassed I could barely do the very thing I do most: talk. I tried to gather myself to remember the list of notes I wanted to share. I cobbled it together for the next 15 minutes or so until we ran out of time.

For over 11 years this church has put up with my sometimes scatterbrained, often disorganized self, and loved me, and my family, and showed up. That night, they turned disappointment into grace, and it humbled me greatly. It was my turn to sit at their feet.

I think I have learned more about the Grace of God from the faithful Christians I have tried to teach than I have ever taught them.
