Eastern Meadows Sews Lap Blankets

Things were humming Wednesday morning, July 10, when both men and women gathered in the Eastern Meadows Church of Christ fellowship room in Montgomery, Alabama, for their monthly meeting to make lap quilts for the less fortunate.

The Eastern Meadows quilters began in 2013. Currently, Becky Neuenschwander is in charge of the quilters. A retired home economics teacher, Becky lends her expertise when anyone has a question or needs help.

The group consists of both men and women of the Eastern Meadows church as well as other local congregations. The quilters give their quilts to patients at the local cancer center, to hospitals, to children’s homes, and to others as needs are brought to their attention. Since beginning this work, they have given 1,007 quilts to others.

Even though the group meets at the building, much of the sewing is done in the homes. Participants bring their quilts to show and tell and donate when finished. Machines are available for those desiring to sew at the building, but some bring their own portable machines.

Supplies are donated by people in the church. Monetary gifts are also received to help with the work. The impact of this work is evident by the many thank you cards posted on a large wall in the supply room.
