Too late

The lovely and delicately bred I will destroy, the daughter of Zion, Jeremiah 6:2.

About a month after the siege of the city broke through the walls and Zedekiah saw his sons put to death before his eyes were put out, 2 Kings 25:9 records the total destruction of Jerusalem,

“And he burned the house of the LORD and the king’s house and all the houses of Jerusalem; every great house he burned down.”

Those with wealth and lives of relative ease were killed or carried off (Daniel was likely in this group) while “some of the poorest of the land” were left.

Like most Americans today, I fit into the “lovely and delicately bred” category.

  • We have more disposable income and leisure time than any other people in history.
  • We like routines, regular meals, and ease of living.
  • We adjust our comfort like a thermostat and complain about the most trivial problems.
  • We ship foods that don’t grow near us to our tables and get doordash rather than cook.
  • Daylight savings time or too much screen time in the evenings makes us overtired.

What a shock it would be for us or must have been for them in Jeremiah’s day to realize that God meant business and our-their lives were destroyed, but then it was too late.
