God’s transformative work: answer & guidance

Featured Post Image - God’s transformative work: answer & guidance

In Ephesians 1, Paul prayed for his readers to grasp the impact of God’s power upon those who believe.  Among the ways God’s power impacts believers, two are:

  1. God’s power provides the answer for our broken lives. In Ephesians 2 Paul described  how God’s power creates new life out of a former one that was mired down in sin and spiritually dead. God can make people alive with Christ and freed from the weight of guilt. (See also Colossians 2:12-13).
  2. When God recreates us in Christ, this also entails creating us for a purpose. Becoming God’s workmanship infuses a person with the purpose of doing good works (Ephesians 2:10). Later Paul would return to this idea of a divinely embedded purpose when he called upon us to live lives worthily of our calling (Ephesians 4:1-3).

What are the good works and calling that God’s people are to fulfill? God’s transformative power creates a new people who are intended to live lives characterized by humility, gentleness, patience, putting up with others in love, as well as maintaining the unity which the Spirit has created in Christ.

Good works, however, envelope more than just these previous spiritual qualities and attitudes. The rest of Ephesians outlines both the principles and practical details explaining how God’s people are to live as God’s workmanship. This is our calling.

God’s transformative work impacts lives. First, it grants an undeserved life from death. Furthermore, it also infuses those of God’s handiwork with purpose and thus direction on how they should live.
