“Do any of the worthless idols of the nations cause rain to fall?
Do the skies themselves send showers?
Is it not you, O Lord our God, who does this?
So we put our hopes in you
because you alone do all this”.
Jeremiah 14.22 NETB.
Praying to an idol, image, or "saint" or seeking a miracle worker to make things happen is of no use. It is God alone who does it all, the Creator of the earth and the heavens. He saves, helps, and sends through his beloved Son, Jesus Christ.
Israel became an idolatrous nation. It did not cease worshiping the true God, but added the worship of the gods of the pagans. For such, not even the intercession of Moses and Samuel would avail, 15.1.
And today, the church of God will not survive, not even with the mercy of Christ, if it abandons true worship, the approved organization, the mission of going to the world to teach the gospel, or sincere brotherly love.
For now, God sends rain to the righteous and the unrighteous. But the day of the great separation is coming.
God will fulfill his purpose in this world. He will do his will among mankind. We’ve no idea what the mysterious providence of God was doing during many of mankind’s dark ages. We cannot see now where the Sovereign One is taking this world, in the midst of confusion, war, conflict, disease, and death. But one thing we can know.
God is good and great and powerful, and nothing can keep him from blessing those who obey him.
The Word is before us, close to us, near us, available to us. People all over the world are reading, understanding, and obeying. We probably don’t know about most of them. We don’t need to know about them.
We need to know if we ourselves are in Christ and saved.
Jeremiah declared that we put our hopes in God. Indeed. No age has needed hope more than ours. No person needs hope more than I.
Man’s little gods are powerless. My little efforts are puny. Few can change the course of human history. But I can change my destiny. And I can offer Jesus’ invitation to others so they can change direction as well.
He who causes rain to fall makes grace to abound. He who spoke the world into existence and made light to exist with a word is the same who brings the light of the gospel to bear on our darkness.
Put your hope in him who alone can do all this.
