Dear God in Heaven,
To save a rebellious people you sent your Son.
But we, for love of family, balk, refuse
To leave our false traditions long established.
Not even Jonathan loved his father more
Than your chosen king, Jesse’s shepherd ─
So much to lose by faithfulness to his friend!
O Lord, may I love the Savior far beyond
Our human ties and weak allegiances,
To do your will who gave me life and being.
