The Bible teaches the necessity of faithfulness in order to be saved. A synonym for faithfulness is perseverance or endurance. Boyer’s little encyclopedia defines it as “steadfastness, constancy in faith, in virtues.” The CNBB Bible describes it as “constancy, endurance. The virtue of bearing difficulties, persecutions, etc., with steadfastness.”
Perseverance aims to fulfill God’s will and, by fulfilling it, to receive what God has promised us, eternal life.
- Faith alone is not enough.
- The promise will not be received without going through trials and persecutions.
- The promise depends on fulfilling God’s will.
We give thanks for God’s power that enables us to persevere.
