“One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him, “There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two small fish, but what are they among so many?”” (John 6:8-9)
More than 5,000 people followed Jesus into an unpopulated area (John 6:10). Amazingly, Jesus was sufficient for the masses – feeding a population equivalent to a small American town with five loaves of bread and two fish!
Why did Jesus put forth such an amazing logistic conquering work? Because he cared for the people; Jesus was sincerely interested in people, and he wanted his disciples to do the same (Matthew 14:13-16).
Though the interest of Jesus was sincere, the sincere interest of the people in Jesus was not reciprocated. They became self-seeking (John 6:15). Their self-interest was preventing them from seeing why Jesus was so interested in them (John 6:26-29).
The lesson for us? Sadly, there is no doubt that people are not as interested in Jesus today as Jesus is in them. He is still sufficient for the masses (Hebrews 7:25) but the masses will choose self-interest over self-denial (Matthew 7:13-14). Regardless of how the masses react, we are called to help others, when possible, with a Christ-like love that still believes in his sufficiency for all.
“From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more. Then Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?” But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Also we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”” (John 6:66-69)
