Ever heard a song leader preach? You will when you read these stanzas.
“Pay attention, my people, to my instruction.
Listen to the words I speak.
2 I will sing a song that imparts wisdom;
I will make insightful observations about the past.
3 What we have heard and learned—
that which our ancestors have told us—
4 we will not hide from their descendants.
We will tell the next generation
about the Lord’s praiseworthy acts,
about his strength and the amazing things he has done.” (Psalm 78:1-4 NET)
In these stanzas there are three lessons we can learn when it comes to teaching the next generation about faith in God:
- We must find a way to teach in an understandable way. This does not mean we change what is being taught. It simply means individuals, even entire generations, learn in different ways, and we become better teachers when we learn different ways to teach.
- We must know what we are teaching. To impart a lesson, we must understand the lesson. The next generation is given a chance to “stand on the shoulders of giants” when efforts are made by the current generation to share what the previous generation knew, lived and shared.
- We must start teaching the next generation when it is young. A youthful generation is not yet responsible for the spiritual atmosphere in which it lives, but that responsibility will eventually arrive. Seeds take time to sprout, so we must sow early and often.
