Wise in your own eyes

This was translated from the Portuguese. I’m writing daily devotionals for our new work on the north side of the city.

Be not wise in your own eyes;
fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.
Proverbs 3.7 ESV.

What does the person do who is wise in his own eyes? He ignores God’s warnings. He justifies selfish ambition and evil desires. He gives voice to fears and surrenders control to one’s own attempts to overcome life’s situations. He adds to the word of the Lord. He finds reasons to be proud.

Those who fear the Lord confess their limitations, inabilities, mistakes and ignorance. They seek to hear the divine word, learn from Christ and serve others. A man who fears God avoids evil and exposes the works of darkness to the light.

The line between self-wisdom and the fear of God is the same as that between good and evil, love and indifference, obedience and rebellion.

On which side of this line will you stand? What will you promote? Will you grow by listening to the voice of human reason or to the voice of Christ?

Each day, Jesus calls us to step out of our own wisdom to walk with him and grow in all the virtues he demonstrates to us.
