“Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; defend me from those who rise up against me. Deliver me from the workers of iniquity, and save me from bloodthirsty men.” (Psalm 59:1-2 NKJV)
The God of Abraham delivered Jacob from Esau (Genesis 32:11), and he delivered Israel from Egypt (Exodus 3:8). This characteristic of God was important to David, the son of Jesse, the king of Israel throughout his life.
As a young man, David acknowledged God’s deliverance from the paw of powerful animals. This experience had David convinced that God would deliver him from the hand of a giant (1 Samuel 17:37). As a maturing man, an unjustly persecuted David told king Saul it was God who had delivered him from the tribulations created by Saul’s insane jealously (1 Samuel 26:23-25); a fact that was used as a point of conviction concerning David’s sin with Bathsheba (2 Samuel 12:7). As a powerful king these memories led David to sing of God’s deliverance on more than one occasion (2 Samuel 22:1-2).
Without God’s deliverance there would have been no Israel. Without God’s deliverance there would not have been a son of Jesse as king. Without God’s deliverance there would be no rescue from our sins to this day. God is the greatest deliverer, and may we remember to sing about it often.
"giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins." (Colossians 1:12-14)
