Purity is about you

Trail — As the temperature rises the hem lines go up and the neck lines tend to plunge.  While this is sometimes seen as a problem that is reflective in women’s fashion, it can also be a problem among men.  In addition to the cut of the hems and the depth of the neck lines, the messages written on shirts and pants can be immoral in nature.

One of my earliest memories involved a trip to Nashville to visit an uncle who was dying of cancer in the Veteran’s Hospital.  Since we were from Manchester, it was really easy for us to become lost as we navigated the large and confusing town of Nashville.  Somehow or another, we ended up on lower Broad Street.  In that day, prostitution was a problem in that area.  There, on a street corner, were two women who were dressed rather strangely.  From the back seat of our Chevrolet Impala I asked my parents, “Why are those women dressed that way?” Continue reading “Purity is about you”

The complexities of modesty

Modesty is a complex issue, especially when we fail to understand all the pieces of the puzzle.

Paul mentions modesty in the context of women who dress to provoke envy and desire (1 Timothy 2:9). However, Christians must display pure lives and flee fornication and lust, which begins in the heart (Matthew 5:27-28; Hebrews 13:4; Matthew 15:19; James 1:14-15).

David was drawn into sin by a nude woman (2 Samuel 11) and God condemns women who flaunt themselves sexually (Proverbs 5).

Modest men for modest women

Legions of articles and sermons have been delivered to the Lord’s church about the dangers of immodest women.

However, a glaring oversight has occurred and we must take steps to rectify this mistake. It is time that we honestly discuss the problem of male immodesty.
