…WHAT IF YOUR job were to find a gun…?
Or a tumor? Both baggage screeners at airports and radiologists at hospitals spend the bulk of their time looking for things they rarely see. In the case of radiologists, routine mammograms reveal tumors only 0.3 percent of the time. In other words, 99.7 percent of the time, they won’t find what they’re looking for. Guns are even rarer. In 2004, according to the Transportation Security Administration, 650 million passengers traveled in the United States by air. But screeners found only 598 firearms. That’s roughly one gun for every million passengers — literally, one-in-a-million odds.
Both occupations, not surprisingly, have considerable error rates. Several studies suggest the “miss” rate for radiologists hovers in the 30 percent range. Depending on the type of cancer involved, though, the error rate can be much higher. In one especially frightning study, doctors at the Mayo Clinic went back and checked the previous “normal” chest X-rays of patients who subsequently developed lung cancer. What they found was horrifying: up to 90 percent of the tumors were visible in the previous X-rays. Not only that, the researchers noted, the cancers were visible “for months or even years.” The radiologists had simply missed them.
As for the nation’s fifty-thousand airport screeners, the federal government won’t reveal how often they make mistakes. But a test in 2002 indicated that they missed about one in four guns. During a similar test two years later at Newark’s airport, the failure rate was nearly identical: 25 percent. More recently, 60 percent of bomb materials and explosives hidden in carry-on items by undercover agents from the TSA were missed in 2006 by screeners at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. At Los Angeles International Airport, the results were even worse: screeners missed 75 percent of bomb materials.
And keep in mind, these are trained professionals dealing with life-or-death issues. Joseph T. Hallinan, “We Look but Don’t Always See,” Why We Make Mistakes, 23-24
THOUGHT: What happens when radiologists don’t find tumors and airport screeners don’t find weapons? People die. But what happens when Christians aren’t watching for, or don’t locate, false doctrines that are secretly smuggled into the local body of Christ? Give it some thought.

Know
IT SEEMS STRANGE that one can know for sure the basic laws of the land, but he cannot know the basic laws of God…
All people are in agreement that their automobile should have a state license tag. They agree that they should drive their automobile on the right side of a two-way street in the United States. They agree that a traffic light showing red is an indication for them to stop. It may be true that all people do no abide by these traffice rules, but it is not because they cannot know what they should do.
To say that one can know the laws of the land and yet cannot know the laws of God is a reflection on God. Is God incapable of revealing truth that man can understand? Obviously not. The problem is not with the Author of truth, but with man who is the subject of truth. William Wardlaw

Lie
AT FIRST WE feel pity for the unnamed “man of God” described in 1 Kings 13…
After all, he accepted a potentially dangerous mission from God by confronting evil King Jeroboam about the unauthorized altar he had built in Bethel. This prophet was faithful and courageous in carrying out his assignment.
But he never made it home alive. As he traveled back to Judah, a lion killed him, and the obvious inference from the text is that God sent the lion. Why would God do such a thing to a man who had been faithful to His mission?
The man of God had not been completely faithful to his mission. One part of God’s orders was that he not eat or drink while in Bethel. At first, he was obedient and refused Jeroboam’s invitation to dine with him.
But an old prophet caught up with him on his way home, and told him that God had changed the orders. God now wanted the man of God to come dine in Bethel, according to the older prophet. The text tells us, however, that the old prophet “was lying to him” (1 Kings 13:18, NKJV).
In most respects, the man of God did well. As long as he listened only to the Lord and did His will, he would be blessed. But when he chose to believe a different message instead of the one God gave him, tragedy followed. He was sincere in what he did, but he was sincerely wrong.
Centuries later, Paul warned Christians about falling into the same trap: “And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness” (2 Thessalonians 2:11,12).
To put it simply, here is the choice we face: Will we believe God, or will we put our trust in what others tell us about God and His will? There are many religious people who speak things that are not found in the Bible. They sound so warm and sincere; how could we believe for a moment that they’re in error?
But if their message doesn’t match the message God has given us in His word, they are in error, and we would be foolish to follow their teachings instead of the Lord’s.
Why have we been given this account about the man of God who believed a lie? Because it’s a perennial problem, one that God’s people continually face.
Let us follow two simple admonitions: “Buy the truth, and do not sell it …” (Proverbs 23:23), and “… Your word is truth” (John 17:17). When we walk only in the light of God’s truth, we’ll be safe. Tim Hall at http://www.forthright.net/heavenly_connections/he_believed_a_lie.html

Truth
WHEN I WAS considering completing a doctoral degree in theology, the representative of the graduate program at the college looked over my transcripts and concluded I had too much Bible and theology in my undergraduate work…
So he gave me a list of two hundred books of preparatory reading before I could be admitted to the program. I checked out the list with someone who know the various titles and learned that none of them contained anything but liberal theology and humanistic philosophy–they were full of profane old wives’ fables passed off as scholorship! The college also required me to take a course called “Jesus and Cinema.” That involved watching contemporary movies and evaluating them on whether they were antagonistic to or supportive of the Jesus ethic. The divine Jesus had been reduced to an ethic! I met with the representative again and said, “I just want to let you know that I have spent all my life to this point learning the truth, and I can’t see any value in spending the next couple of years learning error.” John MacArthur in Qualities of an Excellent Servant

Lie
A STORE MANAGER heard his clerk tell a customer, “No, ma’am, we haven’t had any for a while, and it doesn’t look as if we’ll be getting any soon…”
Horrified, the manager came running over to the customer and said, “Of course we’ll have some soon! We place an order last week.” Then the manager drew the clerk aside. “Never,” he snarled, “Never, never, never, say we’re out of anything; say we’ve got it on order and it’s coming. Now, what was it she wanted anyway?”
The clerk said, “Rain…”

Truth
IN AMERICA, TRUTH in religion is considered an oxymoron…
There is no truth in religion, we are told. It’s all a matter of taste or opinion. You like chocolate, I like vanilla. You like Christianity, I like Islam. If Buddhism works for you, then it’s true for you. Besides, you ought not to judge me for my beliefs! (Norman L. Geisler and Frank Turek, “I Don’t Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist,” 21).

Truth
IT IS BETTER to be divided by truth than to be united in error…
It is better to speak the truth that hurts and then heals, than falsehood that comforts and then kills. It is not love and it is not friendship if we fail to declare the whole counsel of God. It is better to be hated for telling the truth than to be loved for telling a lie. (Adrian Rogers)

Soup
THE STORY IS told of a young man who came to the door of a monastery with a large duck in his arms…
His uncle, who happened to be one of the monks, answered the knock. “Here, uncle, this is a gift for you and the others. Eat it in good health.” The uncle was very grateful and that night, with the duck dressed and stuffed, he and the others enjoyed a generous meal. A few days later, another knock came on the monastery door. “I am a friend of the nephew who brought you the duck. I have been down on my luck lately, and I wonder if I might impose on you for a bite to eat and a place to sleep for the night?” “Of course, my son, you are most welcome.” That night, he joined the monks for some warm duck soup. A few days later, another knock on the door. “Hi, I am a friend of the friend of the nephew who brought the duck. Could I impose on you for a bit of hospitality?” He too was welcomed…more duck soup. A few more days went by. Another knock. “Hello, I am a friend of the friend of the friend of the nephew who brought the duck.” That night at dinner he was presented with a steaming bowl of hot water. He tasted it, looked up, and asked, “What is this?” “Well, this is the soup of the soup of the duck that my nephew brought.”
THOUGHTS: I cannot help but wonder if this is what has happened in much of contemporary Christianity with its multiplicity of doctrines, practices, and watered down moral standards, which bears so little resemblance to the robust faith presented in the New Testament. It’s been handed down to such an extent that the original is hardly recognizable. (Hugh Fulford)
KneEmail: “But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ” (2 Cor. 11:3; cf. 1 Tim. 4:1).
Preference
PEOPLE SOMETIMES REGARD religious issues as being a matter of each individual’s personal preference…
This preference can be based on a number of things. Some people hold to a religion because they were brought up that way. Others attend XYZ church because that’s where their friends go. Some are attracted by buildings, programs, the preacher, or the latest trend, and then embrace whatever doctrines they have, thinking that it makes no difference what we believe
What we teach and what we believe makes a difference. It makes ALL the difference. Jesus said “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32). Most people think that faith and truth are totally separate. They have been convinced by the magazines, television, and newspapers that we of the post-modern age are too enlightened to take the Bible as the sole source of spiritual truth. We have been indoctrinated to believe that the Bible is full of historical, scientific, and cultural inaccuracies and should not be accepted as more than just a product of ancient near-eastern culture. We have been taught to accept it as fable, and as a good moral guideline, but not as the message from an all-wise and infallible Creator God.
I challenge you…I dare you…to examine the Scriptures under the microscope of history, science, linguistics, literature, and logic. Even while holding the Bible up to a higher standard than we hold any other piece of writing, the Bible still comes through on top. The reason why is that the Bible is unlike any other book in the world. It was inspired by Almighty God. It has been tested by critics, skeptics, persecutors, and the test of time. Some have tried to stamp it out or to keep it out of people’s hands, but the Bible remains. Though many scorn its message, yet those who hear it and practice it are forever changed by its Author. “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17).
Get our your Bible and read it every day. Examine its message and meditate upon it. Tune your ears to what God wants you to understand, believe, feel, and do. Pray for wisdom and understanding. Expect and accept the blessings that come from listening to God speak to you through His Word. (Roger Wright)
KneEmail: “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32).
Compromise
IN HUMAN TRANSACTIONS, it is often wise to compromise…
If you want to sell your house and are asking $200,000 but a buyer offers only $180,000, you might be wise to compromise to $190,000. The house belongs to you. If you really need to sell it, you have the right to compromise on the sale. You are dealing with another human being, not with God.
Truth should never be compromised. Why? Because it is the word of God. Jesus prayed to His Father, “Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth” (John 17:17). In Paul’s preaching, he made a clear distinction between the truth and the word of men. “For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe” (1 Thess. 2:13). Any church does “not do well” and “sin lies a the door” when this distinction is not clearly made (Gen. 4:7).
THOUGHT: Compromise grows out of taking the truth too lightly. (Burl Curtis)
