A PAST ISSUE A of Action magazine caught my attention some time ago…
It carried an article about a gentleman from the Philippines by the name of Leopoldo Ducany.
One afternoon, Leopoldo’s wife had brought him a fish which she had purchased at the local market. She asked him to clean it in order that she might prepare it for supper. The meal-to-be was wrapped in a year-old newspaper. As he tore away the paper, Leopoldo noticed an ad for World Bible School. The ad prompted a response, and before long, he was regularly receiving Bible correspondence materials.
At the conclusion of the series of lessons, Leopoldo requested baptism and was added to the body of Christ (Acts 2:47; Galatians 3:27). He made this decision to follow the Lord despite the obvious anti-church sentiment held by Communist rebels in his region.
THOUGHT: I have a thought. If we can (a) reach a man on the other side of the world with (b) a year-old newspaper wrapped around a dead snapperfish, then (c) don’t you think we can reach our local communities with the saving message of Christ…? Cries
MILLIONS OF AMERICANS were RIVTED to their television sets in October of 1987 as rescuers worked feverishly to save “Baby Jessica,” a one-year-old girl from Midland, Texas who found an abandoned well shaft in her aunt’s backyard, fell into the 8-inch hole, and plunged 22 feet down the pipe…
As word spread of Jessica’s plight, the residents of Midland literally stopped what they were doing to offer whatever assistance they could in the rescue operation, or to just stand by and offer moral support.
Our nation watched as rescue crews and volunteer citizens joined hands to dig a shaft parallel to the one that trapped Jessica.
The rescue effort was hamperred by a layer of super-hard rock. However, the rescuers were spurred on by the sound of Jessica’s cry which could be heard from beneath the surface. Her moan from beneath served as an encouragement to rally the troops to do whatever was necessary to save her.
For 58 1/2 long hours, they worked and worked. When paramedics finally coverd a terrified Jessica with gobs of petroleum jelly and slid her out of the pipe into freedom, and the flood of bright television lights, an entire nation cheered in union at her salvation.
THOUGHT: Althought we cannot rescue souls who have already died and gone to torment, we can be motivated by their anquished cries (cf. Luke 16.24, 28) to work diligently to keep those who are still living on earth from going to that awful place. BJ Clarke

Camping
MUCH HAS BEEN written about the alleged time and day for the end of the world…
The media has used it to make fun of “Christianity.” Some no doubt will say that because the Judgment day did not come that it will never happen! But a sobering thought crossed my mind last Saturday night. What if Mr. Camping had been right? What if the world had ended? What if the Judgment Day had occurred?
There would be no more chances for me to tell my wife and children how much I love them or how much they mean to my life.
There would be no more chances for me to say I’m sorry to someone I might have offended.
There would be no more chances for me to preach messages that so badly need to be heard.
There would be no more chances for me to make sure my life is right with God.
There would be no more chances for me to spend time with friends and loved ones.
There would be no more chances for me to tell friends how special they are to me.
There would be no more chances for me to express gratitude to someone who has been kind to me.
There would be no more chances for me to mend broken relationships.
There would be no more chances for me to repent of sins in my life.
There would be no more chances for me to study the Word of God.
There would be no more chances for me to pray for others.
The fact is Mr. Camping was wrong, but it is still true that “the Day of the Lord will come…” (2 Peter 3:9-10). It is still true that we will all “stand before the judgment seat of God.” (Romans 14:10) It is still true that “each one of us will give an account of himself before God.” (Romans 14:12) The question is as valid as ever, “Are you ready for the Judgment Day?”
There is still time. Do something you need to do today. Don’t delay. Remember these words of our Savior, “We must work the works of Him who sent Me as long as it is day; night is coming when no one can work.” (John 9:4)
Dear Father, thank you so much for allowing us more opportunities to do something we need to do now. Help us to quit putting off important tasks that need to be accomplished and important words that need to be said. Help us dear God, to live every day for You. In the Name of our wonderful Savior we pray, Amen. Jeff Jenkins, http://thejenkinsinstitute.com/2011/05/what-if-mr-camping-had-been-right/

Being
AS CONGREGATIONS, WE have tried about everything…
…meetings, lectures, Vacation Bible Schools, “Operation Doorbell,” city-wide campaigns, television and radio programs, bus ministries, building buildings, and hiring preachers with sex-appeal. Some have even followed cultic schemes of “discipling” and instituted unscriptural tactics of evangelism. Many have thought that growth comes naturally, or that, through the employment of slick media methods or “get if for you wholesale” tactics, the noble purpose of the Lord could be realized. Now the time has come, having tried every modern method known to man and having imitated the “numbers-mad” denominations, to read the Lord’s instructions! “When all else fails,” they said, “read the instructions!”
Here comes our Lord giving us the very specific and powerful means to penetrate the world: 13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. 14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5.13-16).
Jesus considered the way to penetrate the world was with light and salt. These two avenues, He says, are a demonstration of the most powerful and overwhelming arguments for Truth: a good life, a life full of good works. Good Christians, living a good life and doing good works before men, penetrate the world! Along with this, someone has said that there are five powerful things in the world. The fifth most powerful thing is an idea. The fourth most powerful thing is an idea that is true. The third most powerful thing is the truth of God’s Word. The second most powerful thing is the truth of God believed. But the most powerful thing in the world is the truth of the Living God believed and put into practice!
For too long, we have been salting ourselves. We have been lighting the church. The Lord says salt and light are no good unless they get out into society, into the world, where lost men and women live and die. Salt penetrates the food, preserves the food. Light penetrates the darkness. Leaven penetrates the bread to make it rise and good to eat.
This is our Lord’s way of telling us that every member of the body of Christ is to be involved in soul-winning, penetrating the world. We can all live good lives. We can all do good works before men so that they can glorify and know our Father in heaven. He calls us all, not only to be busy doing something, but to be busy being something. Vision 9
NOT LONG AGO I saw a program on TV entitled, “They Said It Couldn’t Be Done…”
The program depicted great feats such as the building of the Panama Canal, Lincoln Tunnel, Golden Gate Bridge and the engravings on Mt.Rushmore, etc. The critics said, “It can’t be one.” The people said, “We’ll try it anyway.” They did it!
I once heard a man in the church who was negative and the church with which he worshipped was really growing. They were growing so fast, they needed additional facilities. So they began talking about a new auditorium. The man who was negative said, “I don’t think you can find the land.” They found the land. Then he said, “I don’t think you can raise the money.” They raised the money. After they got the money he said, “Well, I don’t think you can build the building.” They built the building. Then the same fellow said, “I don’t think you can fill it up.” They got busy and filled it up. His final comment was, “Well, I don’t think you could do it again!” Author unknown

Will they fortify themselves? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they complete it in a day? Will they revive the stones from the heaps of rubbish–stones that are burned?” 3 Now Tobiah the Ammonite was beside him, and he said, ‘Whatever they build, if even a fox goes up on it, he will break down their stone wall.’” Nehemiah 4.1-3

Consequences
WHEN A LIFE is at stake, people respond instinctively to the crisis…
The fireman hurls himself into a burning building to rescue a frightened boy.
A mother darts in front of an onrushing automobile to grab a stray child.
An average swimmer jumps into a rushing stream to grab a drowning stranger.
What is it that prompts such heroic acts? One thing–the sure knowledge of the consequences if they do not attempt the rescue.
THOUGHT: If evangelism is to become natural in the church, we must have a full knowledge of the consequences if we fail to reach out. Ken Hemphill, “Passion for the Lost,” The Antioch Effect, 153

Vision3
NOT MUCH HAPPENS without an inspiring, compelling vision…
Not much was happening in Nehemiah’s day. The people had not vision. Jerusalem lay in ruins, and no one was motivated to do anything about it (Nehemiah 1.3). Then along came Nehemiah with a vision to rebuild the gates and wall of the city.
Visions are exciting and energize people. They strike a spark – the excitement that lifts a ministry out of the mundane. They supply the fuel that lights the fire under a congregation – leaders are able to stop putting out fires and start igniting a few.
A vision has the potential to turn a maintenance mentality into a ministry mentality. And when your vision resonates with your values and mission, it generates the energy that fuels the accomplishment of the task. Aubrey Malphurs, “Developing a Vision”

Ask
MILTON WAS FLYING on a plane from Atlanta to Dallas…
He happened to have the middle of the three seats on one side of the aisle. To his right, sitting next to the window, was a young girl who obviously had Down’s syndrome. She began to ask him some simple but almost offensive questions.
“Mister,” she said, “did you brush your teeth this morning?”
Milton, very shocked at the question, squirmed around a bit and then said, “Well, yes, I brushed my teeth this morning.”
The young girl said, “Good, ’cause that’s what you’re supposed to do.” Then she asked, “Mister, do you smoke?”
Again, Milton was a little uncomfortable, but he told her with a little chuckle that he didn’t.
She said, “Good, ’cause smoking will make you die.” Then she said, “Mister, do you love Jesus?”
Milton was really caught by the simplicity and the forthrightness of the little girl’s questions. He smiled and said, “Well, yes, I do love Jesus.”
The little girl with Down’s Syndrome smiled and said, “Good, ’cause we’re all supposed to love Jesus.”
About that time, just before the plane was ready to leave, another man came and sat down on the aisle seat next to Milton and began to read a magazine. The little girl Milton again and said, “Mister, ask him if he brushed his teeth this morning.”
Milton was really uneasy with that one, and said that he didn’t want to do it. But she kept nudging him and saying, “Ask him! Ask him!” So Milton turned to the man seated next to him and said, “Mister, I don’t mean to bother you, but my friend here wants me to ask you if you brushed your teeth this morning.”
The man looked startled, of course. But when he looked past Milton and saw the young girl sitting there, he could tell her good intentions, so he took her question in stride and said with a smile, “Well, yes, I brushed my teeth this morning.”
As the plane taxied onto the runway and began to take off, the young girl nudged Milton once more and said, “Ask him if he smokes.” And so, good-naturedly, Milton did, and the man said that he didn’t smoke.
As the plane was lifting into the air, the little girl nudged Milton once again and said, “Ask him if he loves Jesus.”
Milton said, “I can’t do that. That’s too personal. I don’t feel comfortable saying that to him.”
But the girl smiled and insisted, “Ask him! Ask him!”
Milton turned to the fellow one more time and said, “Now she wants to know if you love Jesus…”
The man could have responded like he had to the two previous questions — with a smile on his face and little chuckle in his voice. And he almost did.
But then the smile on his face disappeared, and his expression became serious. Finally he said to Milton, “You know, in all honesty, I can’t say that I do. It’s not that I don’t want to, it’s just that I don’t know Him. I don’t know how to know Him. I’ve wanted to be a person of faith all my life, but I haven’t known how to do it. And now I’ve come to a time in my life when I really need that very much.”
As the plane soared through the skies between Atlanta and Dallas, Milton listened to the fellow talk about the brokenness in his life. Then he began a Bible study and explained how to become a person of faith.
And he did all of that because a little girl with Down’s Syndrome had asked him to ask the fundamental question that all Christians should be finding a way to communicate, “Do you love Jesus?” Stan Toler, “God Has Never Failed Me, But He’s Sure Scared Me To Death A Few Times.”

Rescue
A FEW WEEKS ago an interesting phenomenon occurred that had Israeli scientists baffled…
A Gray whale appeared off the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Gray whales have not been seen in the Atlantic Ocean for hundreds of years. Apparently the big fella got a little lost as scientists suspect he swam in all the way from the Pacific Ocean. This event had me wondering in numerous ways… about whales.
It reminded me of a story written in the San Francisco Chronicle about a female Humpback that had become entangled in a spider web of crab traps and lines. Weighted down by hundreds of pounds of traps that caused her to struggle to stay afloat, with hundreds of yards of line rope wrapped around her body, tail, and torso, and a line tugging in her mouth.
Thankfully, a fisherman spotted her just east of the Farralone Islands (outside the Golden Gate) and radioed an environmental group for help. Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined that she was in such bad condition the only way to save her was to dive in and untangle her, a very dangerous proposition. One slap of her enormous tail could kill a rescuer. Undaunted, these brave souls worked for hours cutting her free. Finally, they were able to free her. The moment she was freed, the divers say she began to swim in circles. She then came back to each and every diver, one at a time, and nudged them, gently — as if to say, “Thank you.”
THOUGHT: There are deeply wounded and entangled souls in our communities who are desperate and near to sinking, never to be seen again. Where are the brave souls ready to risk the danger and gather a team of rescuers to cut them loose and bring them to joyous freedom from sin? Isn’t this exactly what our Lord has done for us? worthydevotions.com

Miraculin
“Miraculin…”
If you haven’t heard of it before, you’ll no doubt hear of it in the future. In fact, you will probably be invited to a “miraculin” party someday.
“Miraculin” or “miracle fruit” is a small berry that grows on a plant in West Africa that looks like a rhododendron. The technical name is the “Synsephalum dulcificum” plant. It looks somewhat like a cranberry, or when unripe a coffee bean, and has a slightly citrusy taste.
But the “miracle” about this “miracle fruit” is not what it tastes like. The miracle is what it makes everything else taste like. Hold the berry in your mouth for thirty seconds, chew it up but keep it on your tongue, and feel a kind of tingle. After swallowing the berry take a big bite of a lemon or lime or grapefruit. Instead of sour, those fruits taste incredibly sweet. For about an hour, which is about how long miraculin lasts, you can turn raw lemons into lemonade with no sugar. Your salami sandwich can taste like Sara Lee.
Or: Eat a miracle berry then toss down a big shot of vinegar. To your confused taste buds the vinegar tastes as sweet as Mountain Dew.
Oh, I forgot something. When the vinegar hits your throat it burns all the way down. The glycoprotein molecule called “miraculin” only binds to the tongue’s taste buds, fooling the receptors into identifying acids as “sweet.” Your throat still knows an acid when it feels one.
Now do you know why these berries, now in capsule form, are the new thing in parties?
If you bite into a big lemon wedge and instead of puckering you up it floods your mouth with super sweetness, it is not just your tongue that is confused. Your brain doesn’t get it either.
Thought: Many try to change the various “realities” of life, but there are some facts that all must come to grips with sooner or later. We are born, we life for a brief time, and then we die (Heb. 9:27). All will one day be judged for their lives by the everlasting God. We may not like reality, but the facts are the facts. Whether you ever try a miraculin berry or not, do not let the true realities of life escape you.
