Fish

fish3.jpgA PAST ISSUE A of Action magazine caught my attention some time ago…
It carried an article about a gentleman from the Philippines by the name of Leopoldo Ducany.
One afternoon, Leopoldo’s wife had brought him a fish which she had purchased at the local market. She asked him to clean it in order that she might prepare it for supper. The meal-to-be was wrapped in a year-old newspaper. As he tore away the paper, Leopoldo noticed an ad for World Bible School. The ad prompted a response, and before long, he was regularly receiving Bible correspondence materials.
At the conclusion of the series of lessons, Leopoldo requested baptism and was added to the body of Christ (Acts 2:47; Galatians 3:27). He made this decision to follow the Lord despite the obvious anti-church sentiment held by Communist rebels in his region.
THOUGHT: I have a thought. If we can (a) reach a man on the other side of the world with (b) a year-old newspaper wrapped around a dead snapperfish, then (c) don’t you think we can reach our local communities with the saving message of Christ…? Being

Man-lending-a-helping-hand.jpgAS CONGREGATIONS, WE have tried about everything…
…meetings, lectures, Vacation Bible Schools, “Operation Doorbell,” city-wide campaigns, television and radio programs, bus ministries, building buildings, and hiring preachers with sex-appeal. Some have even followed cultic schemes of “discipling” and instituted unscriptural tactics of evangelism. Many have thought that growth comes naturally, or that, through the employment of slick media methods or “get if for you wholesale” tactics, the noble purpose of the Lord could be realized. Now the time has come, having tried every modern method known to man and having imitated the “numbers-mad” denominations, to read the Lord’s instructions! “When all else fails,” they said, “read the instructions!”
Here comes our Lord giving us the very specific and powerful means to penetrate the world: 13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. 14 “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5.13-16).
Jesus considered the way to penetrate the world was with light and salt. These two avenues, He says, are a demonstration of the most powerful and overwhelming arguments for Truth: a good life, a life full of good works. Good Christians, living a good life and doing good works before men, penetrate the world! Along with this, someone has said that there are five powerful things in the world. The fifth most powerful thing is an idea. The fourth most powerful thing is an idea that is true. The third most powerful thing is the truth of God’s Word. The second most powerful thing is the truth of God believed. But the most powerful thing in the world is the truth of the Living God believed and put into practice!
For too long, we have been salting ourselves. We have been lighting the church. The Lord says salt and light are no good unless they get out into society, into the world, where lost men and women live and die. Salt penetrates the food, preserves the food. Light penetrates the darkness. Leaven penetrates the bread to make it rise and good to eat.
This is our Lord’s way of telling us that every member of the body of Christ is to be involved in soul-winning, penetrating the world. We can all live good lives. We can all do good works before men so that they can glorify and know our Father in heaven. He calls us all, not only to be busy doing something, but to be busy being something. Ask

down syndrome girl.jpgMILTON WAS FLYING on a plane from Atlanta to Dallas…
He happened to have the middle of the three seats on one side of the aisle. To his right, sitting next to the window, was a young girl who obviously had Down’s syndrome. She began to ask him some simple but almost offensive questions.
“Mister,” she said, “did you brush your teeth this morning?”
Milton, very shocked at the question, squirmed around a bit and then said, “Well, yes, I brushed my teeth this morning.”
The young girl said, “Good, ’cause that’s what you’re supposed to do.” Then she asked, “Mister, do you smoke?”
Again, Milton was a little uncomfortable, but he told her with a little chuckle that he didn’t.
She said, “Good, ’cause smoking will make you die.” Then she said, “Mister, do you love Jesus?”
Milton was really caught by the simplicity and the forthrightness of the little girl’s questions. He smiled and said, “Well, yes, I do love Jesus.”
The little girl with Down’s Syndrome smiled and said, “Good, ’cause we’re all supposed to love Jesus.”
About that time, just before the plane was ready to leave, another man came and sat down on the aisle seat next to Milton and began to read a magazine. The little girl Milton again and said, “Mister, ask him if he brushed his teeth this morning.”
Milton was really uneasy with that one, and said that he didn’t want to do it. But she kept nudging him and saying, “Ask him! Ask him!” So Milton turned to the man seated next to him and said, “Mister, I don’t mean to bother you, but my friend here wants me to ask you if you brushed your teeth this morning.”
The man looked startled, of course. But when he looked past Milton and saw the young girl sitting there, he could tell her good intentions, so he took her question in stride and said with a smile, “Well, yes, I brushed my teeth this morning.”
As the plane taxied onto the runway and began to take off, the young girl nudged Milton once more and said, “Ask him if he smokes.” And so, good-naturedly, Milton did, and the man said that he didn’t smoke.
As the plane was lifting into the air, the little girl nudged Milton once again and said, “Ask him if he loves Jesus.”
Milton said, “I can’t do that. That’s too personal. I don’t feel comfortable saying that to him.”
But the girl smiled and insisted, “Ask him! Ask him!”
Milton turned to the fellow one more time and said, “Now she wants to know if you love Jesus…”
The man could have responded like he had to the two previous questions — with a smile on his face and little chuckle in his voice. And he almost did.
But then the smile on his face disappeared, and his expression became serious. Finally he said to Milton, “You know, in all honesty, I can’t say that I do. It’s not that I don’t want to, it’s just that I don’t know Him. I don’t know how to know Him. I’ve wanted to be a person of faith all my life, but I haven’t known how to do it. And now I’ve come to a time in my life when I really need that very much.”
As the plane soared through the skies between Atlanta and Dallas, Milton listened to the fellow talk about the brokenness in his life. Then he began a Bible study and explained how to become a person of faith.
And he did all of that because a little girl with Down’s Syndrome had asked him to ask the fundamental question that all Christians should be finding a way to communicate, “Do you love Jesus?” Stan Toler, “God Has Never Failed Me, But He’s Sure Scared Me To Death A Few Times.”

Date

JOSHUA HARRIS AFFIRMS that there are many people who “date” the church, but who are unwilling to fall in love with and be committed to her…
And you know, I think he’s right. How many people do you know who are “believers” but they’re not “belongers.” They believe in Jesus, but don’t want to be tied down. They “date” the church, but want to remain independent and free of commitment and responsibility.
Friends, instead of seeing the church for all its flaws and foibles, why not see it as the wisdom of God (Ephesians 3:9-11), and the beautiful bride of Christ (Ephesians 5:25-32). Committing to the church doesn’t tie one down, rather it anchors one through the storms of life. And it’s flaws? It’s flaws provide us with an opportunity to love, serve, practice patience, and grow more like our Savior.
Listen friends, don’t allow yourself to use the excuse that the church is too messed up to commit to it. Jesus is the only one who has the right to disown or give up on the church, but he never has and never will.
Therefore, let me leave you with this challenge. Many people are fond of saying that we need to develop a heart for the poor or a heart for the lost, and these are good desires. But may I challenge you to also develop a heart for the church? Get involved. Get committed. Take on responsibility. Invest yourself. After all, if Jesus loves the church, shouldn’t we? Rescue

A FEW WEEKS ago an interesting phenomenon occurred that had Israeli scientists baffled…
A Gray whale appeared off the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Gray whales have not been seen in the Atlantic Ocean for hundreds of years. Apparently the big fella got a little lost as scientists suspect he swam in all the way from the Pacific Ocean. This event had me wondering in numerous ways… about whales.
It reminded me of a story written in the San Francisco Chronicle about a female Humpback that had become entangled in a spider web of crab traps and lines. Weighted down by hundreds of pounds of traps that caused her to struggle to stay afloat, with hundreds of yards of line rope wrapped around her body, tail, and torso, and a line tugging in her mouth.
Thankfully, a fisherman spotted her just east of the Farralone Islands (outside the Golden Gate) and radioed an environmental group for help. Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined that she was in such bad condition the only way to save her was to dive in and untangle her, a very dangerous proposition. One slap of her enormous tail could kill a rescuer. Undaunted, these brave souls worked for hours cutting her free. Finally, they were able to free her. The moment she was freed, the divers say she began to swim in circles. She then came back to each and every diver, one at a time, and nudged them, gently — as if to say, “Thank you.”
THOUGHT: There are deeply wounded and entangled souls in our communities who are desperate and near to sinking, never to be seen again. Where are the brave souls ready to risk the danger and gather a team of rescuers to cut them loose and bring them to joyous freedom from sin? Isn’t this exactly what our Lord has done for us? worthydevotions.com

Meekness

bible-image2.jpg WHEN CHRISTIANS SWITCH from talking about football to talking about Christ, they often kick into a “religious twang” or a “stained-glass voice…”
It doesn’t help. Sometimes they flip their argument switch when the subject touches religion, as though evangelism were an intellectual wrestling match. We argue as though Jesus needed defending. We do it, I think, because our ego is at stake, and we must engage and defeat the adversary at all costs. We wind up shooting ourselves in the foot.
Generally speaking, a highly argumentative non-believer isn’t anywhere near the Cross. Entering into heated debate with him will drive him further away.
There’s a basic principle of communication interwoven in this discussion. The louder the noise, the weaker the argument. That’s why a confident, gentle spirit can be so powerful. It exasperates the opposition. Your opponent wants you to join him in the shout and shove match. Don’t! You both lose. Wives who have spiritually indifferent husbands are told they can win them without a word (1 Peter 3:1-4). The supernatural wardrobe of a “meek and quiet spirit” can do what nothing else can do. Fool

atheist2.jpg LEE STROBEL (The Case for Christ, p. 277) TOLD of how he moderated a debate between William Lane Craig and a national spokesman for American Atheists, Inc…
He spoke of how he watch “the faces of people as they discovered–many for the first time–that Christianity can stand up to rational analysis and rugged scruting.” His comments abou tthe conclusion of this debate are also interesting. “In the end it was no contest. Among those who had entered the auditorium that evening as avowed atheists, agnostics, or skeptics, an overwhelming 82 percent walked out concluding that the case for Christianity had been the most compelling” (p. 277). Then he said, “Incidentally, nobody became an atheist.”

Advice

Bible class.jpg WHEN SOMEONE HAS just become a Christian and started out in the Christian life, what advice would you give that person about Bible classes…?
Would you say, “Now the church has Bible classes every Sunday and Wednesday, but they aren’t really important. That the church assembles on Sunday night but you do not have to go if you do not want to”? Or would you say to a son or daughter, “I know that you would like to go today, but I want to read the paper, or I want to sleep late this morning, and I don’t think those Bible classes are to important anyway”?
What advice would you give?
THOUGHT: When we willfully neglect the services (as some are doing) we are telling our children and those around us that the church is not important to us. Our children may even feel the church is not important enough to become members of it. Then what could we say for ourselves? Could we say, “Lord, I did my best to teach them the true value of the church–I did this by going and taking them to every service?” via Main Street Monitor, Manchester, TN

Conversion

change.jpg SOSTHENES (1 Corthians 1:1) WAS A common first-century name…
This name also appears in Acts 18:17. There Luke describes how someone with this name was beaten by a Jewish mob because he failed to make a case against Paul.
If the Sosthenes in Acts 18 is identical to the Sosthenes in 1 Corinthians 1:1, a remarkable conversion took place. Paul’s companion was the very man who had previously tried to prosecute him because of Christianity. If the two names refer to the same man, Sosthenes’ opposition to the gospel had been replaced by an active promotion of the gospel. The fact that only this man’s first name is mentioned indicates the Corinthians were very familiar with him. It is not too unrealistic to believe Luke and Paul described the same man. Brad Price, “First Corinthians,” p. 8.
