John chapter seven showed how the Pharisees hated Jesus and wanted him killed. In this chapter, the Pharisees had sent the temple guard to arrest Jesus and bring him before them.
But something happened. When the temple guard arrived, they had an opportunity to arrest the Lord but didn’t. Imagine the incredulity of the Pharisees when the temple guard returned to them with no prisoner! The guard’s reason for failing to arrest Jesus was they had never heard anyone speak like him (John 7:46).
Nicodemus, who had previously gone to see Jesus at night, asked the Pharisees a question. “Our law doesn’t condemn a man unless it first hears and learns what he is doing, does it?” (John 7:51). The Pharisees dismissed a logical question from one of their own and they dismissed it out-of-hand without even thinking about an answer. They accused Nicodemus of being a disciple of the Lord!
Many will reject Jesus just like the Pharisees did. Nicodemus’ question showed how perverse the conduct of the Pharisees was. Had they thought even for a moment, they might have understood the depth of evil in their hearts. However, that evil never occurred to them. Such was the depth of sin in their hearts that they rejected Jesus regardless of the proof he produced that he was the Son of God.
Yet, people still reject him the very same way. They reject him without thought or examination. They reject him in moments just like the Pharisees did. They don’t believe in the one, true God and would rather believe in a philosophy that teaches everything that exists now came from absolutely nothing. Now that is just, plain sad, isn’t it?
What will you do with Jesus? Have you rejected him like so many in the world have? We beg you to take another look at Jesus in the Bible and see the truth. Then, obey the gospel and become one of God’s children.
