Good tidings of great joy

It is so easy for me to lose some of my things. My keys always seem to find their way into a drawer or pants pocket by themselves. Oh, they’ll find their way back in a few days when I open the drawer and see them or put my pants on and find them there.

One of the things that get lost is the reason why we should be so happy Jesus came to the world.

An angel said he brought “good tidings of great joy.” He said that a Savior had been born that day in Bethlehem.

God’s son was born and brought salvation. Now of all the news bulletins any of us have ever heard, that must rank as the most important, right?

Why? Sin is the answer. From the beginning, humans could not free themselves from sin. Every sin brought the death penalty (Ezekiel 18:4). Sacrifices forgave sin, but the guilt remained.

Then Jesus was born in the small town of Bethlehem. The angels brought good tidings of great joy because here was the solution to the plague of sin and death humans could not overcome. Here was the Savior Jesus to save us from sin (Matthew 1:21).

But shouldn’t the glad tidings of the Savior bring us more joy than just one day of the year? Of course, it should! Because of Jesus, we are free! The apostle Paul exclaimed this in Romans 6:17. “But God be thanked,” he wrote. We are free from sin’s bondage, and now we can serve our God!

That announcement is something none of us should forget!
