Look to Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ is the complete answer of God for the problem and need of mankind. Our problem is not ignorance, which education will solve. Our problem is not poverty, which more robust social programs will eradicate. Our problem is sin. It’s consequence, eternal and spiritual, is separation from God, Isaiah 5.1-2; Colossians 1.21. We cannot now imagine the despair and suffering caused by our rejection of God. No human action will repair that damage. So God sent his Son to pay the price for our sins, 1 Corinthians 6.20. Our Lord declared time and again that he came to save us from ourselves, Luke 19.10. This is the great act of grace on his part, Titus 3.4-7.

Jesus Christ is the full power of God for the godly life that will glorify the Father. He gives us everything we need. “By his divine power the Lord has given us everything we need for life and godliness through the knowledge of the one who called us by his own honor and glory” 2 Peter 1.3 CEB. This power is provided and made available to us through means, by means of divine Scripture, constant prayer, and sincere and devoted love in the family of faith. There is no such power outside of Christ. All that God offers to mankind is found in him.

Jesus Christ is the perfect wisdom of God for knowing the right path to take. “Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God” 1 Corinthians 1.24. His teaching needs no update or supplement. The apostle Paul declared, “We proclaim him by instructing and teaching all people with all wisdom so that we may present every person mature in Christ” Colossians 1.28. Outside the church, Jesus Christ is proclaimed as the sacrifice for sin; inside the church, Jesus Christ is proclaimed as the path to maturity, achievement, success, and satisfaction — as God defines each of these.

Jesus Christ is the best example of the life that pleases God. Whether humility and courage, love and sacrifice, Christ shows us how to think, act, and speak. Others who imitate him also become wonderful examples to strivers toward holiness and consecration. How should we serve others? Jesus Christ is the answer. How should we do the will of God? Jesus Christ is the answer. How should we turn away from temptation? Jesus Christ is the answer. He himself said, “For I have given you an example — you should do just as I have done for you. … If you understand these things, you will be blessed if you do them” John 13.15, 17. Imitate him in everything, especially in his loving mission.

For your sin, for your weakness, for your ignorance, for your guidance, for your purpose, look to the Lord Jesus Christ.
