Who is the greatest person who ever lived? Who is the greatest ruler or king of all time?
Those questions could cause fights.
Some people may point to a particular president or even a dictator as the answer to either one or both questions. There are others who would also like consideration.
Let’s complicate the issue a little. You must prove your answer with the incontrovertible truth.
My answer to both is easy: it’s Jesus. My proof is the inspired Bible from Paul’s letter to the Philippians. Paul wrote that the name of Jesus has been exalted above any other by God the Father himself (Philippians 2:9). The word “exalted” Paul used in this passage means to “raise to the highest rank or power.”
No one that has ever lived on earth can make that claim.
Earlier in the same passage, the apostle listed the reasons why Jesus is the greatest man and greatest ruler who ever lived (notice: is). Christ came to earth in service to God and humanity. He emptied himself and became the same as a slave. He humbled himself even to the point of death on a cross to free all of us from sin.
Why did Jesus do that? Paul wrote that love was the motive (Ephesians 2:4-6).
God loves every person who has ever lived on the Earth or ever will. Christ, who possessed the same love, died for all (2 Corinthians 5:15) because all were dead in sin (Ephesians 2:1-2).
Now, this isn’t the way the world judges greatness, is it? Most people in the world look at financial, political, or social success as the definition. Such thinking is surely short-sighted and poor.
Jesus died for you. He loves you, and he and the Father have done everything they can to help you understand that. Won’t you obey the gospel and give your life to the one who is truly the greatest person who ever lived?
