What does it mean to be a disciple?
Many people think following Jesus means simply accepting him into their hearts. A disciple, however, is a follower and a learner of Jesus, not simply one who accepts him.
Being a disciple of Christ means more than just agreeing with the evidence that Jesus is the son of God. It means doing what Jesus says. In John 8:31, the Lord said, “If you continue in my word, then you are truly disciples of mine” (John 8:31 NASB). The statement he makes is conditional. He says “IF you continue in my word…” We must learn to live and conduct ourselves the way Jesus commands. A true disciple is not just one who agrees with the Master and then says, “I’ll just do part of what he says.” A true disciple is one who surrenders his will to be Master and does what he says.
Being a disciple of Christ means learning from him. This is the true definition of the word. There are many people who consider themselves Christ’s disciples, but have closed their minds to the truth of God’s word. When Jesus said that his disciples were to be baptized (Matthew 28:19) he meant what he said. Some people stop their obedience to Jesus and will not submit to baptism. Sadly, these people have closed their minds to the Master’s teaching and are not his disciples.
Being a disciple of Jesus means discovering the truth of God’s word and acting on it. In John 8:32, Jesus said that his true disciples would know that the truth he taught would make them free. Free from what? The Bible is plain and clear about this. The apostle Paul wrote, “But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness” (Romans 6:17-18 NASB). Disciples of Christ obey their Lord to the best of their ability so that they may remain free from the bondage of sin.
Has sin overtaken your life? Are you searching for the way to be free from sin and become a disciple of Jesus? If so, obey the gospel as soon as you can so that you may become a disciple and a son of God through an obedient faith in Christ (Galatians 3:26-27).
