The idiom “Nature abhors a vacuum” expresses the idea that unfilled spaces in nature will be filled with something. Spiritually, there is no difference. We will either live a spiritual or a fleshly life.
“For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally [fleshly] minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace” (Romans 8:5, NKJV).
Paul later added:
“For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life” (Galatians 1:8).
It’s imperative that we understand that something will occupy our soul. We can’t be spiritually minded through ambivalence or inaction because the flesh will fill the vacuum.
Everything God has asked of us demands persistent focus because our flesh is constantly at war with the spirit. Satan can’t concede any ground. He must take the next hill and his forces must maintain his parcel of land.
The spiritual life is impossible without the proper knowledge because nothing is natural about God’s will. Meaning, the human thing to do will rarely ever match what God requires. The flesh says hate but God says love (1 John 4). Satan says retaliate, God says turn the other cheek (Matthew 5:39).
Every spiritual act occurs through conscious thought. Paul wrote that we must not be “conformed” to the world but be “transformed” by the gospel (Romans 12:1-2). Therefore, we must learn it fully so we can be proactive.
Conforming is passive while transforming requires effort and diligence. Conforming can be done in our sleep. Yet, walking in Christ means that we must take up our cross every moment (Matthew 16:24).
Learn, act and be pleasing to God. Spiritual slumber will only awaken us in hell.
