A famine in the promised land

God promised the Land of Canaan to Abraham, but later the Bible says,

“Now there was a famine in the land, and Abram went down to Egypt to dwell there, for the famine was severe in the land” (Genesis 12:10).

Yes, the land was a gift, but as this verse shows, God’s people would live in a land that was not heaven. The Land of Canaan was not an end, but a means to an end, which was to deliver the Messiah to the world.
