Refusing to profit from someone’s downfall

King Belshazzar saw the handwriting on the wall literally, and offered a huge reward and advancement in the kingdom for Daniel, if he could reveal the interpretation of the handwriting, to which Daniel said,

“Let your gifts be for yourself, and give your rewards to another; yet I will read the writing to the king, and make known to him the interpretation” (Daniel 5:17).

Daniel knew that his personal prosperity did not come from anyone, but the Lord of heaven and earth Himself. The prophet did not interpret dreams and other things for profit. He could not be hired, so he could not be fired. He was not greedy, nor was he covetous.

He knew that the Lord would provide and there was not need to profit from a king’s downfall, for that was what was about to happen.
