Jeremiah lamented the suffering brought on by the Babylonian attack on Jerusalem,
He has hedged me in so that I cannot get out;
He has made my chain heavy.
Even when I cry and shout,
He shuts out my prayer.
He has blocked my ways with hewn stone;
He has made my paths crooked.
Hedged in, without prayer, and difficulty in the way, these things Jeremiah suffered although he did not commit the sins for which the Lord punished Judah, namely, the sin of idolatry.
The prophet knew the sins of our ancient brethren, but he still lamented what had happened to Jerusalem. He mourned over the presence of sin, and the Lord kept the prophet alive.
