As Paul and Silas sat in a prison cell, they sang and prayed. Then the earth shook, and the doors of the prison opened, and all the prisoners could go free,
“And the keeper of the prison, awaking from sleep and seeing the prison doors open, supposing the prisoners had fled, drew his sword and was about to kill himself” (Acts 16:27).
The guard assumed that the prisoners had fled, and knowing that Roman law required his life for letting prisoners go, he decided to spare himself the humiliation, and prepared to take his own life. However, he would immediately discover that no one had escaped, and it led to his eternal salvation.
