After the defeat of Absalom, Israel conferred among themselves as to why they had not blessed David after all that he had done for them,
“Now all the people were in a dispute throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, ‘The king saved us from the hand of our enemies, he delivered us from the hand of the Philistines, and now he has fled from the land because of Absalom. But Absalom, whom we anointed over us, has died in battle. Now therefore, why do you say nothing about bringing back the king?’” (2 Samuel 19:9-10).
God anointed David as king over Israel, and if the Israelites wished to remain faithful to God, they had to re-acknowledge David as their king. Moreover, they recognized all the good that he had done for them, so it was right to bring him back as king.
Have you repaid someone who has blessed you?
