You know the power of the tongue to destroy. Think for a moment: Has someone spoken a word that crushed your spirit or offended you? Surely all of us at some time or another has experienced that, yet, think about this also; it was only the tongue of the other person!
A small part of that person’s body did you get harm.
Let us think further: Have we been the one to crush another person with thoughtless words? We do not remember it as well when we are the perpetrators as well as we do when we are victims, but James speaks to us,
“Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell” (James 3:5-6).
Remember how another person’s words were like a small fire that burned up the forest within you, and be sure that you are not the one to set someone else’s forest on fire.
