Hope at the beginning of despair

When despair crushes you, it is hard to see hope, but towards the beginning of the Babylonian destruction of Jerusalem, and the captivity for the Jews, the Lord had Jeremiah write to the captives, saying,

“For thus says the LORD: After seventy years are completed at Babylon, I will visit you and perform My good word toward you, and cause you to return to this place” (Jeremiah 29:10).

That meant they would not remain in Babylon forever, although the captivity would not be over in a matter of months either, but they could see that the Lord was keeping His word, punishing them for their sins, and bringing them back after they had learned their lesson.

Bad times come into our lives, yet, look to the Lord and search for hope.
