From one great historic event to another

Even as the Lord spoke of the imminent approach of Babylonian captivity, He also spoke of the return from captivity, and what a significant event it would be,

“‘Therefore, behold, the days are coming,’ says the LORD, ‘that they shall no longer say, “As the LORD lives who brought up the children of Israel from the land of Egypt,” but, “As the LORD lives who brought up and led the descendants of the house of Israel from the north country and from all the countries where I had driven them.” And they shall dwell in their own land’” (Jeremiah 23:7-8).

Previous to the captivity, God spoke through the prophets and He referred back constantly to the deliverance from Egypt, and that He was the God who had done delivered them, and therefore they should obey Him, but because they failed to do that, He would take them out of their land, not returning them to Egypt, but to Babylon, and thereafter the prophets and historians would refer to that event to remind the Jews of their God and what He had done for them.

Likewise, our God has done something extremely significant for us, sending His Son Jesus Christ to die for us that we might live, and now Bible writers refer to that great event to remind us why we should obey the Lord.
