Some people treat verbal persecution as though it is not that bad, since physical persecution is worse. However, persecution is persecution and the Lord considers verbal persecution of His saints evil, and something for which He will recompense the persecutors.
Jeremiah spoke of the verbal persecution heaped upon him, saying to the Lord,
“For I heard many mocking: ‘Fear on every side!’ ‘Report,’ they say, ‘and we will report it!’ All my acquaintances watched for my stumbling, saying, ‘Perhaps he can be induced; then we will prevail against him, and we will take our revenge on him” (Jeremiah 20:10).
The prophet considered verbal persecution against him to be painful, and I do not think anyone wants to tell Jeremiah that his persecution was nothing.
