The Feasting of Kings and Queens

King Ahasuerus of Persia provided a huge feast for his nobles, “In accordance with the law, the drinking was not compulsory; for so the king had ordered all the officers of his household, that they should do according to each man’s pleasure. Queen Vashti also made a feast for the women in the royal palace which belonged to King Ahasuerus” (Esther 1:8-9).
Ancient kings ruled as dictators, but they wanted to show their kindness and one way to do that was not to force everyone to drink at a party.
Moreover, such a king would not want to leave out the women, although he had them party separately.
Why is this in the Bible? It sets the stage for a beautiful story.
