Are You Seeking to Justify Yourself?

A man asked Jesus what had to be done to inherit eternal life, and Jesus asked the man what the Bible said. The man quoted Scripture, which included loving your neighbor as yourself. Jesus told him to do that and he would live.
However, Luke wrote of this man, “But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, ‘And who is my neighbor?'” (Luke 10:29).
The man did not want to consider everyone as his neighbor, or he may have thought that he was already keeping that command, but did not want to be exposed as showing that he was not keeping it toward every person.
Either way, he was not concerned about doing the Lord’s will, but about finding a way out of doing the Lord’s will.
How do you approach Scripture? Are you looking to believe and to do everything the Lord tells you, or are you looking for a reason why something should not apply to you?
