The problem with making a vow or promise is that we do not know the future and its temptations. After Peter insisted that he would always be loyal to Jesus, He said to Peter, “Assuredly, I say to you that today, even this night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times” (Mark 14:30).
Listen to Peter and his fellow-disciples, “But he spoke more vehemently, ‘If I have to die with You, I will not deny You!’ And they all said likewise” (Mark 14:31).
Jesus appeared not to say anymore, knowing that arguing with His disciples would not accomplish a thing, but they would see the truth sooner than they realized.
Promises of loyalty are good, but we should prepare ourselves for the fierce temptations that may come our way.
