Ridding the Congregation of Sin

Certain Israelites, including leaders, committed adultery with the Moabites and worshiped their gods, bringing wrath from God, “Then the LORD said to Moses, ‘Take all the leaders of the people and hang the offenders before the LORD, out in the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may turn away from Israel.’ So Moses said to the judges of Israel, ‘Every one of you kill his men who were joined to Baal of Peor'” (Numbers 25:4-5).
They took serious action against a serious sin, lest the sin spread and Israel destroy herself.
The church also must deal with sin, although not in the way God authorized Israel, but still Christians and the church must deal with sin lest it spread (Matthew 18:15-20; 1 Corinthians 5).
