Saying Something in the Lord's Name Does Not Make It True

The Lord told Jeremiah to write a letter to the Jews already in Babylonian captivity, and part of what he was to say was this, “For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Do not let your prophets and your diviners who are in your midst deceive you, nor listen to your dreams which you cause to be dreamed. For they prophesy falsely to you in My name; I have not sent them, says the LORD” (Jeremiah 29:8-9).
It was as though the false prophets believed that if they uttered something and then put the Lord’s name with it, that made it true, treating the name of the Lord as a good luck charm. However, they spoke falsehood.
Do not let someone lead you astray simply because they throw the Lord’s name onto something. Examine everything that everyone says with the written word of God.
