Doing Harm to Self

by J. Randal Matheny, editor
Bethany_Storro.jpgTwenty-eight year-old Bethany Storro of Vancouver, Washington, reported that an unknown assailant threw acid in her face, requiring hospitalization and long-term treatment.
She appeared on national television and spoke in detail about that moment and how the crime affected her life.
Later, after police investigations, she admitted to having put the acid on her face herself. There was no anonymous attacker. She had made up the story. She did it to herself.
While we shake our heads and ask why a person would do such a thing to oneself, sometimes we’re guilty of similar behavior.
We torpedo relationships by selfish and immature conduct.
We load our consciences with “oughts” and “shoulds” until action is immobilized.
Our fears hold us back from challenging ourselves and launching into greater things.
Physical addictions wreak long-term harm on the body.
Teens cut their arms in rituals, and adults sabotage their work by overcommitment or by programming themselves for failure.
More than that, in the spiritual realm, we throw acid in our own faces when we leave off knowing the will of God, tell ourselves that one time won’t matter, rationalize that our sin isn’t as bad as other transgressions, or refuse to fulfill God’s mission in the world.
We do eternal harm to ourselves when we refuse to acknowledge truth in order to continue embracing some comforting error. Physical self-harm may last a lifetime; spiritual self-harm endures forever.
Many are the ways to inflict injury upon ourselves. But Jesus offers us healing and wholeness through the Cross. Both Bethany Storro and I need to follow that path.

  1. Hello Sir,
Very good article. However, where are the Biblical references? There is POWER in the WORD:
“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, …” (Hebrews 4:12, KJV).
“If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; …” (I Peter 4:11, KJV).
    Thank you…
