Answering a Question with a Question

Sometimes before we can answer a question, we have to know what the questioner thinks. Sometimes we have to show the questioner how he thinks, for he may not realize that he has bad foundations.
Jewish leaders confronted Jesus with a question about His authority. However, before He would answer their question, He fired back a question that would show they did not accept heavenly authority, and that He could not then answer their question, because they would not accept His answer. When He asked where John the Baptizer received His authority, Luke records for us, “So they answered that they did not know where it was from. And Jesus said to them, ‘Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things'” (Luke 20:7-8).
When you ask a question be sure your motives are pure.
When you answer a question be sure that you understand the motives of the questioner.
