Thoughtful Questions

God ordered Israel to wipe out all the inhabitants of the land of Canaan. The city of Gibeon heard what Israel had done to all their enemies and so Gibeon feared. They decided to make peace with Israel by pretending to come from a far country, a place outside of Canaan. Gibeonites were Hivites nationally.
“Then the men of Israel said to the Hivites, ‘Perhaps you dwell among us; so how can we make a covenant with you?'” (Joshua 9:7). The Israelites did the right thing by asking questions, but their question could easily draw out a fake answer, which indeed it did.
Asking the right questions is an art, requiring premeditation that will bring out the truth, or at least will set up other questions that can lead to the truth.
