Why Do We Think Evil?

Jesus forgave a man of his sins, but the scribes charged Jesus with blasphemy, believing that only God can forgive sins and that Jesus was not God. “But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, ‘Why do you think evil in your hearts?'” (Matthew 9:4).
It was evil to charge Jesus with blasphemy. They did not know Jesus, therefore, they jumped to a conclusion that was wrong. What motivated them to make such a charge? He had already done things to prove His identity. They needed to examine the motives of their hearts.
In the same way, let us ask ourselves why do we think evil in our hearts? All of us on this e-mail devotional list know God and know that He knows our thoughts. Why then do we think evil? Why do it when we know He knows what we think?
What do we hope to accomplish with evil thoughts?
