Are You Qualified to Criticize Others?

Jesus asked how we could look critically at the speck in our brother’s eye, while not considering the plank in our own eye, that is, what makes us think we have the right to criticize the little problem in our brother’s life, but that we can overlook the major problem in our own lives? He questioned further, “Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye’; and look, a plank is in your own eye?” (Matthew 7:3, 4).
I may genuinely want to help my brother or sister, but I may not be qualified to do so. Yet, the problem of criticizing the specks in the eyes of others is a huge problem. Christians run each other down all the time. Before you do that the next time, ask yourself whether you are qualified to do it. Do you have a major problem you need to fix first?
