The Fear of God

When Abraham went to the land of the Philistines, he misread the spiritual condition of the people and lied about his wife, saying that she was his sister and she agreed to the plan. They feared that the king or someone else might kill Abraham to have Sarah, if she was his wife. If they believed she was his sister, then they would not kill him. Sure enough, the king did take Sarah. However, God revealed to the king that when he took Sarah, he had taken another man’s wife. The king rebuked Abraham. Abraham explained what he had been thinking, “Because I thought, surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will kill me on account of my wife” (Genesis 20:11).
Abraham judged correctly that when the fear of God is not in a place, those people will do horrible things. However, Abraham was wrong in believing the fear of God was not in that place.
Therefore, be sure that you fear God so that you will not commit sin, but be careful in judging others, for you might misjudge them.
