The Region-Wide Response to John's Preaching

Every time I read it, I am amazed by the response of the Jews to the preaching of John the Baptizer, “Then Jerusalem, all Judea, and all the region around the Jordan went out to him and were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins” (Matthew 3:5-6).
I want to be like John when I grow up. Or do I? Do I have what it takes to be like John? If I have the skills, do I have the heart and spirit of John? What was it about him that everyone went out to him, confessed their sins, and let him baptize them?
May each of us preachers rise up to have the heart and spirit of this man who preceded the Lord Jesus Christ.
