The Danger of Greed

Obadiah prophesied against Edom, the nation that descended from Esau, Jacob’s brother, which made the nations of Edom and Israel brothers. Later in history Edom joined others in attacking Israel (Obadiah 10-14), and taking from Israel more than was necessary, for the Lord said through Obadiah,
“If thieves had come to you,
If robbers by night–
Oh, how you will be cut off!–
Would they not have stolen till they had enough?
If grape-gatherers had come to you,
Would they not have left some gleanings?”
(Obadiah 5)
Edom became worse than thieves and robbers, taking more than they would. Grape-gatherers have a contract to pick so much, but Edom went beyond any contract on what to take from Israel. Therefore, Obadiah pronounced doom upon Edom and now the nation no longer exists.
Do not become greedy, for it will only destroy you when you thought it would better you. Greed deceives. It promises to give, but takes away the life of the greedy.
