The Sacrifices of War

As the Lord began to reveal what He would do for Judah, He had Jeremiah say, “For thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning the houses of this city and the houses of the kings of Judah, which have been pulled down to fortify against the siege mounds and the sword…” (Jeremiah 33:4).
What caught my attention was that the people of Jerusalem pulled down their houses, even the houses of the kings, to help fortify the city against the attack of the Babylonians. Sacrifices have to be made like that during war. Even the kings realized that they had to lose their homes one way or another. They would either lose them in the fall of Jerusalem or lose them in defending Jerusalem.
However, as great as that sacrifice was, it was not enough, because the problem was not that they had not sacrificed enough in fighting Babylon, but they had disobeyed the Lord, and there is no defense against the Lord when He attacks.
The best thing is to obey the Lord.
