Can You Be Born When Old?

Jesus spoke to a ruler of the Jews, Nicodemus by name, telling him that if someone is not born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. “Nicodemus said to Him, ‘How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?'” (John 3:4).
Why should the idea of being born again have shocked Nicodemus? Undoubtedly they used that metaphor to picture positive life-changing events. We do today. I tell people that I have been born three times. First, when I entered this world in 1957. Second, when I became a Christian in 1976. Third, when I received a kidney in 1998.
Jesus referred to my second experience as one that all people must undergo to enter the kingdom of God.
Have you been born again in the sense of which Jesus spoke?
