Jesus Singled Out

Why did the man named John–not the writer of the Gospel, but the one who preached before Jesus–come baptizing? “And John bore witness, saying, ‘I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him. I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, “Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.” And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God”‘” (John 1:32-34).
God the Father used the event of baptism to single out His Son. The Son of God would not look different from anyone else, except in the ways that we are all unique, but His appearance would not give Him away. Therefore, the Father chose an event at which time He would signify the One who was His Son.
Therefore, one day as John baptized, a man came to him, and when John baptized that man, wonderful things happened. John then knew who was the Son of God and John gave his witness to that fact.
